The Saint Benedict Medal- is a symbol of many things- first and foremost is that it contains symbols about Saint Benedict of Nursia's life (the front side). Second, the medal is a ward against Satan, fallen angels, and encroaching evil, nicknamed the "devil-chasing medal". Third, it can be a reminder to us of the power of prayer specifically in times of temptation and suffering. The letters on the cross-- C.S.S.M.L. (vertical) are letters for the Latin inscription: 'Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux' which means 'The Holy Cross be my light', and N.D.S.M.D. (horizontal) are letters for the Latin inscription: 'Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux' which means 'Let not the dragon be my guide'. The four letters in the quadrants of the cross- C.S.P.B. stand for the Latin inscription: 'Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti' which translates to 'Cross of the Holy Father Saint Benedict'. In the middle at the very top is the Latin word 'Pax' which means 'Peace'. The initials around the perimeter are VRSNSMV-SMQLIVB which is for the Latin phrase: 'Vade Retro Satana, Nunquam Suade Mihi Vana- Sunt Mala Quae Libas, Ipse Venena Bibas' which translates to 'Step back satan, do not suggest to my thy vanities- evil are the things thou profferest, drink thou thy own poison'.
